Caluya Municipality is part of the Antique Province of mainland Panay Island. Is composed of islands of Caluya,  Semirara, Sibato, Sibay, Sibol, Liwagao and Nagubat. Caluya Island has 8 Barangays and in Barangay Poblacion, where the municipality Hall is located, in 2008 has enacted a public ordinance to convert 15% (5 hectares) of its coastal area as a protected marine sanctuary. DENR in CENR office in Culasi and Caluya Municipality have asked for the technical assistance of PSDCF to establish this sanctuary. Caluya Island is an elongated island that stretches from north to south. It is approximately 7.3kms long and 4.7kms at its widest point. See maps below of where Caluya Island is in the Philipines, map of Caluya and a map of the precise location of the Caluya marine sanctuary in Barangay Poblacion. This area was initially identified by a local fisherman as a feeding ground of sea turtles and when PSDCF has done a preliminary visual underwater observation and sonar analysis of the area, the coral reefs was found to be in excellent condition.

Preliminary photographic survey performed by PSDCF's volunteer diver, Elodie Campresse show numerous animal species representative from Poriferans, Cnidarians (gorgonians, jellyfishes, anemones, hard and soft corals), Platyhelminthes, Annelids (polychaetes), Arthropods (crustaceans), Molluscs (bivalvia, gastropoda), Echinoderms (starfishes, sea cucumbers, brittle stars) Chordata(tunicates, osteichthyes).

PSDCF is committed to continue what it started in Caluya by yearly visiting Poblacion's marine sanctuary to monitor its progress. Hopefully the other Barangays (local government units) in the whole municipality of Caluya will realise the need to protect their marine resources and follow the step that Barangay Poblacion has initiated.

Currently the DENR is working with the Caluya municipality to organise mangroves plantation and early in 2010 PSDCF will again work with them to map, monitor and evaluate the current status of the mangrove distribution in the municipality.

Presently, please view the amazing underwater photographs on this page of the newest marine sanctuary in the Philippines by Elodie and make sure you watch the Caluya slideshow below!
